One big construction site

April 3rd, 2008 by beth · 3 Comments

Vancouver is a funny mixture of leaving things alone (electric buses and an old train through the heart of town) and constructing gazillions of new condos/shops/whatever all at once.

Sometimes I feel like every crane in North America must be here…

This is the site of the Olympic village for the 2010 winter olympics here (and that’s Science World on the left - left-over from Expo here in 1986). They’ve even built an island in the harbour for people to be presented with their medals for the TV cameras (vomit).

Another Olympics-related construction is the skytrain line from the city to the airport which involved digging up a huge stretch of Cambie Street (a once-thriving village south of downtown). It was like an open sore for ages and is only just starting to heal….

Here it is in September last year

And here it is the other morning…

i think that’s the first time we’ve seen an overall view of vancouver :-) Might have to get a wide view in my entry too. Which will come just as soon as the visitors leave. After which I’m going immediately to Hong Kong.

I love the picture with all the cranes! The mountains in the backdrop look like they should be left alone by all the skyscrapers though.

Actually the island is a “habitat” island not related to the Olympics. It is designed to bring birds and intertidal marine life back into False Creek. People can access the island, as guests, but there is no bridge so it is a bit of an adventure. The island will not be open to the public for some time yet, though, because we are giving the native vegetation and trees a chance to take hold. So far we have seen cormorants, a juvenile bald eagle, salmon fry, jelly fish, and crabs all visiting the new “habitat island”. At this time, there is no formal role for the island in Games time.
